Greetings Unkindled,

We’ve had confirmation from the factory in China that the first of many shipping containers have begun their journey to us at SFG HQ in Manchester, UK. Our warehouse team are prepped and ready for the containers to arrive, so we can begin shipping Wave 2 to Backers in July 2018.

Next week we'll be back to our regular unboxing updates and we'll be delving into the Kickstarter Exclusive Old Iron King Expansion.

That's a lot of Darkroot Expansions.

We’ll keep you updated on the progress of these containers, including when they arrive at SFG HQ and when we begin shipping Wave 2 to Backers.

The Darkroot Expansion & Asylum Demon Expansion will launch at Retail in August. If you didn’t order these during the Kickstarter Campaign, then you can pre-order them today from the Steamforged webstore.

If you can’t wait for the games to arrive then check out these articles and videos below for a breakdown of each Expansion:

Gaping Dragon Expansion - Production Sample

Gaping Dragon Mega Boss Expansion
Gaping Dragon Mega Boss Expansion

Welcome Unkindled!

Today we’re delving back into the unboxing of the Mega Boss Expansions. So far we’ve revealed:

Wave 2 is on track for delivery in July 2018. Last week on our Twitch Channel we saw Lead Developer, Alex Hall, and Office lacky, Gareth, take on the fearsome Four Kings. You can view that playthrough here.

This week we’ll be opening the Gaping Dragon box and taking a look at the contents inside. If you missed out on ordering this via the Kickstarter then you can pre-order your copy here!

Some are so lost that they are not even worthy of place amongst the shambling and vengeful corpses of the Undead Burg. Their fate instead is to eternally wander the endless corridors of the flooded and labyrinthine Depths, banished forever from the light of the sun. The Gaping Dragon is one such creature, an abomination hideously transformed by its ravenous hunger.

The Gaping Dragon is terrifying!!
The Gaping Dragon is terrifying!!

SPOILER ALERT: If you want the gameplay experience of the Gaping Dragon Expansion to be entirely unexpected do not read the text, just look at the pretty pictures.

Obligatory Spoiler Alert out of the way…let’s have a look at what you get in the box:

  • 1x Rules Insert
  • 1x Gaping Dragon Miniature
  • 1x Gaping Dragon Health Dial
  • 1x Gaping Dragon Data Card
  • 14x Gaping Dragon Behaviour Cards
  • 2x Gaping Dragon Treasure Cards
  • 4x Corrosion Condition Tokens
  • 4x Level 4 Encounter Cards
  • 1x Mega Boss Game Board

Custom Game Elements

The Gaping Dragon introduces a new Boss Mechanic that players will have to overcome. The Gaping Dragon has the capability to perform back-to-back attacks via it’s Crawling Charge Mechanic. Whenever the ‘Crawl’ Icon appears on a behaviour card the Gaping Dragon will immediately perform a Charge where it slams its barbed maw forward before rapidly skittering across the ground. Players will need to ensure they’re prepared for a barrage of attacks!

The second new mechanic is the Corrosion Condition. When a character is suffering from the Corrosion Condition and makes a Block roll, they suffer -1 successes on the roll. If they suffer damage from the attack, then the condition is removed. (A Corrosion Token, much like a Bleed Token, is not removed at the end of a character’s activation.)

Campaign Scenario ‘Into the Depths’

The Gaping Dragon Campaign Scenarios are set in Dark Souls™ 1 following on from the Darkroot Expansion and can be played over a series of five sessions. Along the way you’ll have to defeat the Winged Knight, Titanite Demon, Artorias, Ornstein & Smough, and then finally the Gaping Dragon.

We have also included rules to allow this campaign to be followed if you only have the Core Set. You quite simply replace the Artorias Boss Fight with the Dancer, and do not use the Darkroot Expansion Encounters as instructed.

Dark Souls™: The Board Game & ALL Expansions have completed their Development Cycle and are now locked.

Wave 2 is on track for delivery in July 2018. Last week we previewed the Four Kings Expansions and unboxed them on our Twitch Channel. If you missed it you can view it on our YouTube Channel.

Not all demons are storied, with names that leap from the pages of history, Unknown amongst the scholars of men are those damned and contemptible creatures of vitriolic darkness which prefer the company of kindred spirits to that of mortals…

SPOILER ALERT: If you want the gameplay experience of The Asylum Demon Expansion to be entirely unexpected do not read the text, just look at the pretty pictures.

Obligatory Spoiler Alert out of the way…let’s have a look at what you get in the box.

  • 1x Rules Insert
  • 1x Asylum Demon Miniature
  • 1x Asylum Demon Health Dial
  • 1x Asylum Demon Data Card
  • 9x Asylum Demon Mini Boss Behaviour Cards
  • 2x Asylum Demon Treasure Cards
  • 1x Stray Demon Data Card
  • 13x Stray Demon Mega Boss Behaviour Cards
  • 2x Stray Demon Treasure Cards
  • 4x Pillar Tokens
  • 4x Level 4 Encounter Cards
  • 1x Mega Boss Game Board

Custom Game Elements

The Asylum Demon is a Mini-Boss and functions the same as any other Mini-Boss with the exception that the encounter takes place on a Mega-Boss Game Board. This is because of the Custom Game Element Pillar Smasher. This enables the Asylum Demon and Stray Demon to destroy the pillar terrain features on the game board. If you’re within one node of a pillar when it is destroyed, you’ll immediately suffer one damage and the Stagger condition.

The Asylum Demon and Stray Demon also have a number of sluggish, yet powerful attacks that players can take advantage of. A new ‘wind up’ icon gives players the ability to reposition their character. When the behaviour is resolved you can spend one stamina to move on node in an attempt to move out of the way of the attack.

Campaign Scenario ‘Demon Hunting’

The new campaign from the Asylum Demon starts you in the Undead Asylum and ends with the Anor Londo showdown against Ornstein and Smough. It is directly compatible with the Core Game and requires no additional expansions required.

Let's take a look inside the box!!
Let's take a look inside the box!!

Hi Unkindled,

Dark Souls™: The Board Game & ALL Expansions have completed their Development Cycle and are now locked. This includes the Retail Exclusive Mega Bosses - more on them in the future!! Today, however, we have a Production Sample to preview to you! If you’ve missed our previous previews you can check them out below:

Wave 2 is on track for delivery in July 2018. Last week the Production Copies of Wave 2 Expansions arrived. We asked which Expansion you wanted to see first, and it was a close-run vote between The Four Kings Expansion and The Gaping Dragon. But, The Four Kings managed to just eek it out ahead…

Now dwellers of the bleak and lonely Abyss, the Four Kings at one time were great leaders amongst men, the rules of New Londo. As that once-proud kingdom now lies in ruins, so too is spent the virtue of humanity of the Four Kings, who remain to watch over that flooded and cruel place alongside their Darkwraith knights…

SPOILER ALERT: If you want the gameplay experience of The Four Kings Expansion to be entirely unexpected do not read the text, just look at the pretty pictures.
Obligatory Spoiler Alert out of the way…let’s have a look at what you get in the box.

  • 4x Four King Identifier Tokens

The Four Kings Mega Boss

We don’t want to spoil too much of the fight but there are some new game elements introduced with The Four Kings Expansion. Most Mini/Main/Mega Boss battles pit you against a single powerful Boss, the Four Kings puts you and your friends against four bosses. But don’t fret, only one King begins on the board, when the behaviour deck is exhausted another King is summoned into play, and so on until all Four Kings are present (or dead). This fight is a sprint, not a marathon. If you dilly dally you’ll soon find yourself respawning at the bonfire.

New Campaign ‘Bathed in Flame’

The Four Kings Expansion comes with a new Campaign, Call of the Abyss, that draws on content from the Core Game, Darkroot Expansion and The Four Kings Expansion. Over Five Game Sessions you will venture from the Undead Parish, through the Royal Wood, before ending in The Abyss

Unboxing the Expansions!

We’ll be unboxing The Four Kings and the Asylum Demon on SFG Live this Thursday (3rd May) via twitch.tv/Steamforged at 4PM BST with one of the Lead Developers, Alex Hall. If you can’t watch the livestream, then the video will be available to watch on the Steamforged Games YouTube Channel the following day.
