Dark Souls™ - The Board Game is a strategically challenging, deeply immersive combat exploration game for 1-4 players.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Steamforged @ New York Toy Fair!
about 7 years ago – Tue, Feb 21, 2017 at 11:22:45 PM

Hey unkindled!

We have had quite a few questions regarding shipping. To confirm once more - all models from the Core Set are currently on route to our assembly plants in the USA and Germany from China, ready for final assembly and to then start shipment of the Core Set in March.

Don't worry - our boat is actually IN the water :)
Don't worry - our boat is actually IN the water :)

We have had a few more sets of the final production models sent ahead of time which we have been showing off at the New York Toy Fair. The final production cards have also arrived at Steamforged HQ and we eagerly await the rest of the printed materials.

New York Toy Fair has been great for us - we have loved meeting a ton of new retailers and the demand/hype from retailers and customers is huge when it comes to Dark Souls.

It looks like there will be plenty of people to play the game with at your LGS upon release.

A short update for now, but most importantly:

Quest for the Unkindled: Get Out the Vote!
over 7 years ago – Fri, Jan 20, 2017 at 10:31:34 PM

Bearer of the curse,

Will you make a pact?

To seek unity and show us the flame,

And prove we’re not alone?

If you’ve the stones for it, we wish to you

An eternal glimpse of our dark canvas

As your last reward.

Is Dark Souls™: The Board Game your most anticipated board game of 2017? Then you should let the world know by voting in BoardGameGeek’s current poll here: https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/220042/20-most-anticipated-board-games-2017-voting-open-6.

With only two days left to vote, Dark Souls: The Board Game is currently ranked #23 overall. If you can rally the Unkindled to get Dark Souls to #1 of the 60 entries, we’ll produce a Print & Play version of the Mimic rules (in English) to celebrate and reward your efforts. While there is ever more work to be done, we could get this extra content released by February/March. (You’ll also help rvinyard earn some BoardGameGeek Gold for nominating the game.)

Do not fear, the final ranking of the contest will in no way impact the updates for rules and content as they are completed and approved. This extra content is just an incentive for taking the time to make a BGG account and vote (and our attempt to sate the ever-growing want that plagues you).

Print & Play games (or parts of games) give players all of the digital assets they need to print out the game on their own, cut out the cards or other components, and play the game before it’s available anywhere else. They’re not early playtest or prototype versions of the game but final game content put into a cohesive, ready-to-print format. These files must be created separately from the files that go to the game manufacturer but can be delivered to players more quickly than the months it takes to produce and ship a game. The Mimic Print & Play will include printable versions of:

  • Mimic data cards that list the block, resist, HP, and other necessary stats used when characters encounter the Mimic in Dark Souls: The Board Game
  • Mimic behaviour cards that are used much like boss behaviour cards and allow the Mimics to perform different actions from turn to turn
  • Ambush cards used to let players know if a chest terrain feature is a benign treasure chest or a dangerous Mimic
  • Tokens that can be used in place of the Mimic miniatures
  • A PDF of all the rules needed to use Mimics in Dark Souls: The Board Game

You can vote for Dark Souls for six different categories, including:

  • Overall
  • Crowd funded
  • Cooperative
  • Solitaire
  • Fantasy
  • Dungeon Crawl
Voting ends January 22!

Core Game Rulebook Download and Invaders Update!
over 7 years ago – Tue, Jan 10, 2017 at 09:52:38 PM

Hi Unkindled,

Following on from our previous update showing the progress being made with production we’re happy to announce we are releasing the PDF version of the Core game rulebook. We’d hoped to have it available before Christmas but unfortunately the approval for publishing it free online only came through yesterday. The link can be found below for you all to download for free and have a read through, we’re extremely proud of how the rulebook has turned out and we hope you all like what you see!

Invaders Update

We all like to invade right?
We all like to invade right?

One thing you may notice is missing from the Core rulebook is Invaders, this was a decision made by the design team towards the tail end of development on the Core game and we’ve been weighing up which way to go for the past few weeks.

When it comes to putting together a rulebook the order and layout of information is of paramount importance, striking the correct balance of what information is needed upfront and what information is needed at specific times is the key to a well written set of rules. For example, when playing in your first session you don't need to know how bosses function in combat until you get to the boss room... So putting these rules ahead of all of the rules you need to know before you reach a boss wouldn't make any sense.

Invaders function as a combination of a Grunt and a Boss and the way in which you encounter them is unlike anything else in the game, which led to their placement in the Core rulebook always feeling out of place.

To elaborate, the ideal placement in the book would be:
Just after Embers.
Just before Encounters.
Just before Grunt Behaviours.
… Just after Boss behaviours.
… And just after Icons.

As you can see, with the layout of the rulebook there were just too many boxes to try and tick to get them in the right spot. The rules for the Invaders will be provided in a separate rules pamphlet in the Invaders expansion box.

So what does this mean for the Core Box Invader?
We’ve made the decision to remove the Invader from the Core box, and move him to the Invaders expansion.

So what does this mean for Kickstarter Backers?
All it means for our Backers is that you’ll have to wait for Wave 2 until you can have Invaders in your games. You’ll still be getting all of the models seen on the campaign page.

We hope you like what you see within the rulebook and it should give people something to pass the last couple of months before the shipments start going out in March - not long to go!

Happy New Year! Pledge Manager Close Day
over 7 years ago – Fri, Jan 06, 2017 at 10:48:15 PM

 Hey Unkindled,

Happy New Year!

The pledge manager is now closed. Cards will now be charged and pledges locked - thank you once again for helping us get this all sorted so we can move onto completing production and shipping...speaking of production:

Hopefully these images give you a sense of how big the scale of this project is!

Everything for the core set is still fully on target for starting shipment of the core game in March - a month ahead of our expected delivery in April.

We will continue to keep you updated as we progress with the project and share with you at every stage what we can. We know there is a lot of demand for certain content (Rulebook & Gameplay Video especially) and we will continue to work with Bandai Namco to get as much content as we can out prior to release to our backers.
